Elon Musk Reveals Latest Optimus Robot Prototype
Elon Musk has presented the latest prototype of the humanoid robot being developed by Tesla (NASDAQGS:TSLA -1.10%) .
Musk shared the stage with Optimus at the annual Tesla AI Day presentation in Silicon Valley, where the biped robot walked steadily to the front of the stage before waving to the audience.
Musk told guests that the robot could go on sale within a few years and estimated a price below $20,000 USD. The presentation included a video that showed Optimus performing menial tasks such as carrying boxes and watering plants.
Musk, who has previously talked about “a future of abundance” where robots do the work and humans reap the rewards, said: “It really is a fundamental transformation of civilization as we know it.”
The Tesla founder has also sought to allay fears of a Terminator-style robot take-over, pointing out that Optimus will be limited to a speed of 5mph and will feature a tamper-proof, hardwired off switch.
